The very first “knife” in the history of the world was a fixed blade knife believed to have been used during prehistoric times to hunt, eat and defend against dinosaurs. Back then, the blade consisted of a sharp shard of rock, flint, wood or bone which was fashioned to cut, slice and stab things.

The Oldowon was used up to 2.5 million years ago and is the oldest known knife-like tool to be discovered as of 2014.” // Source

We have come a long way since the Oldowon. Today, a fixed blade is a non-folding knife forged for dozens of applications.

Hunting knives, survival knives, combat knives, tactical knives, boot knives, dive knives, thrower knives and many more models all fall into the fixed blade category. They do not flip, slide or spring outward, and are usually stronger blades because the tang extends into the handle and doesn’t consist of moving parts.

What are the perks of a fixed blade? Well, the element of surprise (in a bad way) is simply not there with the fixed blade knife, and it’s really what you would want in a failsafe blade; a solid piece of steel ancored all the way down to the end of the handle (if it's a full tang blade). Fixed blade knives are designed for the really tough jobs, and are the answer for many hunting and outdoor excursions. They’re durable, simple, and will never fold on you in severe weather or tricky situations (see what we did there?).

Fun fact: Fixed blade knives are sometimes called  “sheath knives” because it’s the only way to conceal the edge, as opposed to folder knives which fold or flip into the handle. Every blade has a place and purpose, it’s just a matter of being prepared and equipping yourself with the right tool for the job. Brands like Survivor, Elk Ridge, MTech and Elite Tactical make superior fixed blades at at the fairest price range you're likely to find on the market.
