Possibly the swiftest way to deploy a blade from it’s handle, spring assisted knives (or assisted opening knives) allow knife wielders to single handedly operate their device with a little effort from their thumb or index finger. We’re giving it extra “cool points” over automatics (switchblades) because it requires more skill (as opposed to letting the machine do all the work for you) and over manual folders (because they can’t ensure a reliable and consistent lock-up every time). Compared to other blade deployment mechanisms, the spring assist is a fairly new feature to the knife universe (roughly 25 years old) but it is a contender rapidly increasing in popularity, especially in everyday carry models.

The first assisted opening knife was designed by Blackie Collins (Founder of Blade Magazine) in 1995 and was named the "Strut-and-Cut"; it was based on the strut of his Ducati motorcycle. A similar concept was developed three years later by knifemaker Ken Onion with Onion's idea based on a similar mechanism in his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Onion applied for a patent on his design in 1998.” // Source

Spring assisted knives contain a small spring mechanism built into the pivot or handle of the tool that propels the deployment of the blade from it’s enclosed position when the “flipper index tab” or “thumb stud” has pressure applied to it. Once you get to a certain point manually, the stored energy in the spring assist mechanism causes the blade to fully flip open without having to manipulate it the entire way into the open-lock position and vice versa. The end result is an edge that you can utilize safely, quickly and conveniently. Plus, it’s just fun to use and looks badass.

So what is the best spring assisted knife out there today? Tac-Force has a stellar collection, but it all depends on your style and what you envision using it for. Karambits, folding knives, tactical knives, and rescue knives are just some of the models that can contain the spring assist mechanism all designed for different purposes, with a variety of functions and features.
